The Faculty of Foreign Languages ​​of Vasyl’ Stus Donetsk National University has been the leading educational and scientific-methodical center of the region in the realm of philology.

History of our Faculty

The roots of the faculty stemmed from one of the significant dates in our history: in 1965 the evening department of the Romano-Germanic philology at the philological faculty of Donetsk State University was launched. 1973 was marked by bringing up the question of establishing a faculty on the basis of the Department of the Romano-Germanic Philology. Nadiya Mykhailivna Pisarevska became the first dean of the faculty and took her position within the spell between 1973 – 1976.

About the Faculty

The Faculty of Foreign Languages ​​of Vasyl’ Stus Donetsk National University has been and still remains the flagship in the study of advanced German and Romance languages, combining new and well-proven teaching methods with the most up-to-date techniques, ideas,  computer programs, equipment, and technical means of teaching.

The faculty members provide students with basic knowledge, as well as conduct scientific research in the modern fields of philology.

The Faculty deals with the fundamental training for undergraduates and graduates in full-time study.

Bachelor’s Degree

Educational qualification level of a person who, on the basis of complete general secondary education, has obtained basic higher education, fundamental and special skills and knowledge regarding the generalized object of work (activity), sufficient to fulfill the tasks and duties (works) of a certain level of the professional activity, intended for primary positions in a particular activity.

Master’s Degree

This degree is an educational and qualification level of a specialist who, on the basis of a bachelor’s qualification, has acquired in-depth special knowledge and skills of research and innovation character, has a certain experience of their application and production of new knowledge for solving problematic professional problems in the certain field.

Department of Translation Theory and Practice

The Department of Translation Theory and Practice implements the training of specialists: Bachelor’s degree in English Translation and Master’s degree in Translation in two foreign languages ​​(English and German), teachers of translation in higher education, who can perform qualified theoretical and practical activities. The educational program is aimed at developing many professional competencies, including the ability to apply in-depth knowledge of linguistics and translation studies professionally; use freely, flexibly and effectively the learned languages, verbally and in writing, in different genre-style varieties and registers of communication, solve communicative tasks in different fields of life; ability to produce verbal and written texts of different genres and styles in foreign languages; ability to professionally use different translation techniques and others.

Department of English Philology

The department prepares students in the specialty “English language and translation” in full-time study. Educational and professional program provides for the acquisition of skills and competences of the teacher of the first foreign (English) and second foreign languages (German / French / Spanish), as well as a translator. The program provides for student-centered, problem-oriented studying, which uses communicative and interactive methods during lectures, laboratory and practical classes.

Department of German Philology

The department prepares students in the major “German Language and Translation” in full-time study. Graduates of the program can carry out teaching, educational, scientific-methodical, organizational-managerial activity in educational institutions, as well as translation activities in institutions of all forms of ownership, which provide for this, according to the occupational classifier DK 003: 2010. Positions can be as follows: Teachers of higher education institutions of I-II degrees (code KP 2310.2); professionals in philology, linguistics and translation (code KP 2444); philologists, linguists, translators and interpreters (code KII. 2444.2), secondary school teachers (code KP 232).

Department of Romance Languages and World Literature 

The Department of Romance Languages and World Literature trains specialists of Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in the “French language and translation” education program. Graduates of the program can carry out teaching, educational, scientific, methodological and organizational-managerial activity in educational system institutions, as well as translation activity in institutions of all forms of ownership, which provide such, according to the occupational classifier DK 003: 2010.

Department of Foreign Languages of Professional Specialism

The Department of Foreign Languages of Professional Specialism provides courses in foreign languages (English, German, French and Spanish) for undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students of economics, humanities and natural sciences of non-linguistic faculties of Vasyl’ Stus Donetsk National University.
