Department of English Philology

The Department of English Philology trains bachelor’s and master’s degree students in English as the first and second foreign language. Also, the department members deliver lectures on various aspects of the English language theory and supervise the student’s scholarly research.

The main aim the department pursues is to answer the needs of the region in highly qualified specialists who can combine competences in the English language mastering with rich background philological awareness and knowledge of modern cultural context. The graduates are able to provide educational process at educational establishments of different levels, i.e., primary and secondary schools, gymnasiums, lyceums, technical schools and higher educational establishments. The above task is fulfilled by highly qualified team of teachers which includes 1 Dr. Sc., 3 PhDs, and 2 assistants. The chamber always welcomes their best graduates to join the team, many of our graduates continue their education as post-graduate students.

One of the priorities the Departments sets for itself is constant improvement of the teachers’ professional level which allows to introduce into the teaching process provided by the chamber new approaches and instruments for efficient education. This goal is achieved through close cooperation with the British Council and US Embassy divisions in Ukraine. In addition, native speakers from the UK and USA are regular visitors to the Department classes and speaking clubs.

Another priority direction the Department sets is the scholarly development of its students. The Department students publish the results of their works in Ukrainian and foreign scholarly journals, take part in conferences of different levels (all-Ukrainian and international). The student’s scientific works, closely mentored by the Department teachers, regularly receive diplomas at All-Ukrainian Scientific Competitions. In addition, owing to their high scholarly achievements, the Departments students annually occupy high position in the University competition of young scholars.

The Department graduates work in many towns and cities around Ukraine and abroad (the USA, Australia, Germany, France, Latvia, Poland, etc.).

The educational program “English Language and Translation” consists of general education classes, introductory disciplines in the sphere of philology, and the courses aimed at the formation of translation, interpreting, and teaching skills in the students. Fundamental linguistic disciplines and an innovative approach to teaching English and translation/interpreting constitute the cornerstone of the program. It focuses on the formation of skills and competencies of a translator/interpreter from the first foreign language (English) into the second ones (German / French / Spanish), as well as those of a teacher in the respective languages.

The major subjects are taught exclusively in foreign languages; the classes are conducted in linguaphone classrooms. Likewise, research in the field of philology is performed, and students undergo two internships (in translation and teaching). In addition, students have an opportunity to do an internship abroad.

The educational program is oriented towards the development of both general and professional competencies, among which are the ability to:

  • professionally apply in-depth knowledge of linguistics and translation studies;
  • demonstrate profound knowledge of language as a special sign system, along with its nature and functions;
  • distinguish between languages according to their genetic and structural typology;
  • analyze and describe the sociolinguistic situation;
  • fluently and effectively speak and write in the languages studied in different genre and style varieties and registers of communication (formal, informal, neutral);
  • solve communicative tasks in various spheres of life;
  • create oral and written texts of different genres and styles in foreign languages studied;
  • freely use special terminology in the chosen field of philological research;
  • use IT to solve specific problems;
  • professionally use various translation techniques.
